Pianist Satoko Fujii splits her time between her Japanese homeland and New York City. She records and performs on both sides of the globe. This is a bracing trio studio date recorded in Brooklyn, New York. Fujii's five compositions are given stunning workouts by these three well matched players. Drummer Jim Black is a powerhouse, bursting into explosive outbursts that perfectly mirror the movement of the composition and of the piano in particular. Bass player Mark Dresser moves with subtle grace between rhythmic anchoring and flights of fancy. Fujii is a remarkable presence, both as a musician and as a composer. Barely a decade into her career by the time this was recorded in 1998, she's led ensembles large and small, and worked solo. As an improviser she can be supple and ferocious, all of which is beautifully captured here.
