Rating 4.5 THE GLOSSED OVER CLOUSEAU CLASSIC Movie Lover: from LOUISVILLE, KY US -- May, 26, 2016

THIS IS, OF COURSE, THE CLOUSEAU FILM THAT HAS BEEN LARGELY IGNORED BECAUSE OF A CONSPICUOUS LACK OF THE ELEMENTS ASSOCIATED WITH THE PETER SELLERS FILMS. ALAN ARKIN REPLACES PETER SELLERS IN THIS 1968 ENTRY, BUD YORKIN DIRECTS THE FILM WITH A SURE HAND, WITH SELLERS AND BLAKE EDWARDS FILMING THE PARTY FOR U.A. AND THE MIRISCH GROUP AT THE SAME TIME (SUMMER 1967), THE THOROUGHLY BRITISH STYLE OF KEN THORNE SUCCEEDS THE REFLECTIVE STYLE OF HENRY MANCINI, THERE IS NO CATO, NO PINK PANTHER GEM, NO INSPECTOR DREYFUS BUT AN ENGAGING PLOT IN WHICH CLOUSEAU'S FACE IS UTILIZED BY A NOTORIOUS GANG TO PENETRATE ALL OF THE BANKS IN SWITZERLAND AT THE SAME TIME. CLOUSEAU IS ON LOAN-OUT TO SCOTLAND YARD TO APPREHEND THE NOTORIOUS ROBBERY CLIQUE. WHAT EMERGES IS A THOROUGHLY BRITISH FILM IN WHICH SUCH VETERAN ACTORS AS PATRICK CARGILL, BARRY FOSTER, MICHAEL RIPPER, FRANK FINLAY, CLIVE FRANCIS, BERYL REID, AND RICHARD PEARSON. ITALIAN ACTRESS DELIA BOCCARDO ENHGANCES THE INTERENATIONAL LURE OF THE FILM AS DOES ERIC POHLMAN AS A BANKER (POHLMAN WOULD TURN UP AS A CRIME MOGUL IN RETURN OF THE PINK PANTHER SEVEN YEARS LATER). ALAN ARKIN OPTS FOR A BROADER COMIC APPROACH TO THE CHARACTER THAN PETER SELLERS, LESS INCLINED TO COMIC GYMNASTICS THAN HIS PREDECESSOR. THERE IS NO PHANTOM THIEF, BUT AN ENIGMATIC MASTER THIEF, JOHNNY RAINBOW. THERE ARE MAJESTIC FRENCH AND SWISS LOCALES FOR THE FILM IN ADDITION TO THE LONDON SCENES, INVENTIVE CAR CHASES AND FIGHT SCENES TO GIVE INSPECTOR CLOUSEAU ITS DISTINCTIVE MARK.
