Much like 1988's Becoming Became, Music finds Dan Balmer making an effort to be commercial and appeal to light jazz radio stations without resorting to outright musical prostitution. Nothing mind-blowing occurs, but the guitarist is likable enough on such soft, easygoing pop-jazz as "The Times We Spend Together," "Prom Night" and "Somebody's Girl." Sometimes, Balmer is much too Metheny-ish for his own good; on "Noah and Tim" and "A Winter Beginning," he sounds like he was going out of his way to emulate the Metheny Group's Letter From Home. Overall, this isn't a bad CD, but as Balmer demonstrated on Don't Forget the Way Home, he's capable of a lot more. ~ Alex Henderson
