Product Description:

Originally released on Riverside (93529).
Personnel: Mongo Santamaria (congas), Pat Patrick, Bobby Capers (saxophones), Marty Sheller (trumpet), Victor Vengas (bass), Rodgers Grant, Frank Hernandez, "Chihuahua" Martinez, Julian Cabera (percussion).
When this live recording from the famed Greenwich Village night club was first released in 1963, the Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria was a bona fide U.S. pop star, having had a hit the previous year with Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man." This set contains a few similar-sounding instrumentals, such as "Creole" and "The Jungle Bit," as well as many fascinating virtuoso displays of Santamaria's percussive skill (notably his solo on "My Sound"), but it's mostly a time capsule of early-'60s Latin jazz, performed by one of the masters of the genre.
