When this live recording from the famed Greenwich Village night club was first released in 1963, the Cuban percussionist Mongo Santamaria was a bona fide U.S. pop star, having had a hit the previous year with Herbie Hancock's "Watermelon Man." This set contains a few similar-sounding instrumentals, such as "Creole" and "The Jungle Bit," as well as many fascinating virtuoso displays of Santamaria's percussive skill (notably his solo on "My Sound"), but it's mostly a time capsule of early-'60s Latin jazz, performed by one of the masters of the genre.
