Triple Play is a specially priced box set that brings together three Gerry Mulligan releases from the mid-'90s: the Brazilian program Paraiso-Jazz Brazil (1993), which prominently features singer Jane Duboc; a quartet recording entitled Dream a Little Dream (1994); and Dragon Fly (1995), which is credited to the Gerry Mulligan Quartet but also features 11 guest musicians, including guitarist, John Scofield, smooth jazz icon Grover Washington, Jr. on sax and vibraphonist, Dave Samuels. Of the three albums, Dream a Little Dream takes the prize; Mulligan sounds best when working in a more disciplined, small group context, and the (mostly) standards program is a plus. Paraiso works nicely as well, thanks partly to Duboc's luscious voice and the expert accompaniment of his small backing ensemble. Paraiso was Mulligan's first complete program of Brazilian music (which is rather surprising, given the penchant for Latin rhythms shown by so many of his contemporaries), but he sounds like he's been playing sambas his whole life. Dragon Fly suffers from overproduction and sideman bloat, but it has some fine moments as well. Overall, this set is a fine introduction to Mulligan's later work. ~ Rick Anderson
