Falling somewhere between the '90s proto-sludge of Buzzoven and the recent crop of extreme black metal artists like Asunder, LIGHT'S BANE is one of the millennium's more aptly titled albums. Trees' choice of band moniker, then, is a bit ironic, as their epic nosedives into relentless, feedback-driven death dirges represent the sound of something withering on--not flowering from--the ground. Both "Nothing" and "Black" eclipse the 10-minute mark, never budging from their slithering vocals and cavernously morbid anti-atmospherics. LIGHT'S BANE is certainly hypnotic, provided you're looking for mood music that is intent on pummeling pleasant ambience into submission.
