This two-fer CD collects a one-album distillation of the mammoth triple-LP art-rock project CONSEQUENCES and 1978's more pop-oriented L.
Arrangers: Godley & Creme; Kevin Godley; Lol Creme.
A bargain priced two for one--although when one of the albums is a triple, condensed down to a single disc's worth of instrumentals and jingles, it's maybe not such a good deal after all. CONSEQUENCES, in its original form, remains one of the most laudable conceits of the rock era, an album to line up alongside Jeff Wayne's WAR OF THE WORLDS in the annals of records that were just so preposterous that you have to adore them. But while the war has taken on a whole new life of its own, CONSEQUENCES remains a byword for excess and absurdity and, listening to the highlights served up here, there's a good reason for that. Move onto L, the duo's second album, and more even pastures began to spread out, most notably the maniacal "Sandwiches Of You," and the Anglo-Zappa shellshock of "This Sporting Life." "Hit Factory--Business Is Business" remains as scathing today as it was in 1978, and "Punchbag" still makes you want to hit something. L is not Godley-CrŠme's greatest album by a long shot. But you can certainly sense it coming.
