Arguably the greatest violinist in jazz history, Stephane Grappelli is well represented on this Verve compilation. Although the disc features no songs performed with Grappelli's renowned pre-World War II foil, guitarist Django Reinhardt, it does include latter-day recordings of Reinhardt classics by the deft-handed French fiddle virtuoso (some of which he co-penned), such as the delicate "Nuages" (here expanded into an orchestral version) and the jaunty "Djangology." Drawing material from the late 1960s to early '90s, the collection is an excellent overview of Grappelli's later career, though anyone interested in the lauded musician should definitely take in his remarkable '30s and '40s recordings with Reinhardt.
