He's now known simply as "The Voice" to country music fans, but when Vern Gosdin recorded this album in 1977, he was better known to rock fans, having recorded groundbreaking country-rock sessions with Gene Clark and Chris Hillman of the Byrds. In fact, Vern had retired from the music business altogether when producer Gary Paxton (of Skip & Flip fame) persuaded him to record "Hangin' On", which Vern had recorded with brother Rex back in the ?60s, as a single. Vern then got his old pal Emmylou Harris to sing on the record, and after the thing charted, he went into the studio to record this, his first solo album. And what an album it was - with no less than four other chart hits (Yesterday's Gone; Till the End; It Started All Over Again, and Mother Country Music), it went Top 10 on the country charts, and cemented Vern's reputation as the one guy who could sing toe-to-toe with George Jones. Grammy-winning writer Colin Escott contributes notes.
