Bandleader and rock guitar luminary Carlos Santana pays homage to late reggae prophet Bob Marley on the album cover, seen posing in a Marley tee with the yellow, red, and green rays of Rastafari blazing forth from his head. And in keeping with a central theme of both artists' careers, the name of the game here is FREEDOM. Old friend Buddy Miles joins the festivities as lead vocalist, and he's the perfect man for the job. He sings these up-tempo '80s synth-rock anthems of love and liberation with piercing soulfulness. The presence of Woodstock-era organist Gregg Rolie amplifies the reunion vibe as he sits in with newer Santana keyboard mainstays Chester Thompson and Tom Coster.
"Veracruz" opens with the wake-up sound of roosters, singing the utopian praises of that town to the sound of a get-up-and-go beat that would bring smiles to the faces of visitors and the Mexican tourist board alike. The wails of Carlos's guitar urge us along to sing "Songs of Freedom," and then break into more serious funk that encourages us to "Dig Deeper" into our inner being. "Mandela" is percussionist Armando Peraza's urgent instrumental tribute to the once-imprisoned South African freedom fighter.
