Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey between April 1, 1960 and September 8, 1961 and live at the Five Spot, New York, New York on July 16, 1961.
Eric Dolphy, who made inroads on alto saxophone, flute, and bass clarinet, was ridiculously prolific during the two years he spent recording for Prestige, releasing over a dozen albums as a leader. And that's not even counting his work as a sideman for other Prestige artists during that time, like Oliver Nelson and Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis. All of it is captured on this massive, nine-disc box.
THE COMPLETE PRESTIGE RECORDINGS follows the breathtakingly rapid evolution of Dolphy's music over that short period of time. We can hear his distinctively knotty, angular playing work its way from bebop to avant-garde, as he interacts with a stellar cast of sympathetic artists including Booker Little, Mal Waldron, Jaki Byard, and many more. From his classic starting point, OUTWARD BOUND, to his seminal LIVE AT THE FIVE SPOT (with plenty more along the way), this set is a true piece of American musical history, and it's well worth navigating your way through its potentially intimidating scale.
