This album's mostly famous for its first track, "The Everlasting First", which boasts the long-awaited union of the two black psychedelic superstars of the '60s, Arthur Lee and Jimi Hendrix (who co-wrote the tune and plays on it), but give the whole thing a listen and you'll discover this 1970 release is a severely underrated item in the Love album catalog. More cohesive than "Out Here", yet more eclectic than anything else the band ever did, "False Start" includes country rock ("Keep on Shining", '70s boogie ("Flying"), psychedelic soul ("Stand Out; Anytime") and many points in between, the last hurrah of an iconic band and bandleader.
Love: Arthur Lee (vocals, guitar, piano); Gary Rowled (guitar); Frank Fayad (bass); George Suranovich (drums).
Additional personnel: Jimi Hendrix (guitar).
Love: Arthur Lee.
FALSE START was the third album Arthur Lee made with the reconstituted version of Love, having broken up the original band after their landmark FOREVER CHANGES album. While the previous two hinted strongly at a Jimi Hendrix influence with their harder, bluesier apporoach, FALSE START puts its cards on the table by opening with "The Everlasting First," co-written with Hendrix and featuring the psychedelic legend's guitar work. The rest of the soon-to-collapse band's energies are put into everything from folk-rock to country-rock over the course of this surprisingly diverse disc.
