Single Room Furnished is the story of a young woman, lost and lonely in a city of millions, and her desperate attempts to find love and happiness, only to lose it again and again. Through stories told by Pops, the apartment house manager, Johnnie lives life too full, too fast but with all her heart. With each betrayal and loss, she changes her name, hair color and self-image and somehow finds the courage to go on, while retreating ever deeper into a protective shell. After a painful breakup, Johnnie assumes an alter ego, May, and following even more heartbreak, becomes Eileen, a prostitute with lurid stories about men and what they want. Yet, through it all, she never gives up, continuing to struggle to bridge the gap of loneliness that separates one human from another.
