Two more of Peggy's long-lost Capitol albums, released in 1965 and 1970, respectively! "Then Was Then" was produced by Dave Cavanaugh, with arrangements by Billy May, Cy Coleman and Sid Feller; it includes "Trapped in the Web of Love," "Losers Weepers," "Free Spirits," "I Go to Sleep," "Leave It to Love," "The Shadow of Your Smile," "They Say," "Seventh Son," "Everybody Has the Right to Be Wrong," " The Masquerade Is Over," and the title track. A bonus track is a lost master from the session, "This Could Be the Start of Something Big," while the other two bonus tracks, "Stop Living in the Past" and "Maybe This Summer," are singles never before on CD. "Bridge over Troubled Water," meanwhile, features Mike Melvoin arrangements of "You'll Remember Me," "The Thrill Is Gone," "Something Strange," "Have You Seen My Baby," "He Used Me," "(There's) Always Something There to Remind Me," "I See Your Face Before Me," "Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head," "What Are You Doing the Rest of Your Life?," and the title tune. 26 tracks!
This excellent two-fer from Collectors Choice combines two representative Peggy Lee Capitol LPs from distinct stages in her career. Lee was unique among the 1950s-era popular singers in that she could handle just about any genre--standards, jazz, R&B, blues, film work--with aplomb. Her masterful eclecticism can be heard to advantage on 1965's THAT WAS THEN... which boasts a credible version of the Ray Davies's "I Go To Sleep" (also a '65 hit for Cher) as well as a hip, funky "Seventh Son." The title song is a classy slice of contemporary '60s popcraft co-written by lyricist Lee with composer Cy Coleman. Besides Simon & Garfunkel, 1970's BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER also features a rockin' & rollin' version of Randy Newman's "Have You Seen My Baby?" as well as soulfully sung covers of B.B. King's "The Thrill Is Gone" and countryman Jim Weatherly's "He Used Me," all in addition to two Bacharach-David gems and a beautifully sung "I See Your Face Before Me," the only traditional jazz standard in the set.
