Peggy's versatility knew no bounds; when she got a hold of the right song, she just creamed it, no matter what the era or genre. These 1970 and 1971 albums prove the point, they're full of both hit and lesser-known tunes from contemporary songwriters, all powerfully and sympathetically interpreted. Arranged and conducted by Benny Golson, "Make It with You" includes "One More Ride on the Merry-Go- Round," "The Long and Winding Road," "That's What Living's About," "The No-Color Time of the Day," "Let's Get Lost in Now," "Passenger of the Rain," "I've Never Been So Happy in My Life," "You'll Remember Me," "Good-Bye," and the title track. "Where Did They Go?" includes a wonderful cover of George Harrison's "My Sweet Lord," plus "My Rock and Foundation," "Help Me Make It Through the Night," "All I Want," "I Don't Know How to Love Him," "Goodbye Again," "Sing," "I Was Born in Love with You," "Losing My Mind, and the title track. There are four bonus tracks from the period on this twofer; three of them, "No Mor," "You're Driving Me Crazy," and "Didn't We," are unreleased, and the fourth, "Pieces of Dreams," is a rare, 45-only track from Michel Legrand's score to the 1970 film!
On this Collectors Choice two-fer--MAKE IT WITH YOU (1970) and WHERE DID THEY GO (1971)--listeners can judge the success of Peggy Lee's headlong plunge into contemporary pop, 1970s-style. The great singer samples songs by Neil Sedaka (the giddy "One More Ride On The Merry-Go-Round"), Lennon-McCartney (a relaxed "The Long & Winding Road"), and Paul Anka ("That's What Living's About"), as well as that seductive title track by Bread, the masters of '70s soft-rock. Interestingly, this album reprises "You'll Remember Me," another carnival specialty number that first appeared on an earlier LP, BRIDGE OVER TROUBLED WATER. WHERE DID THEY GO continues the contemporary trend with a harpsichord-adorned "Help Me Make It Through the Night," "I Don't know How To Love Him" (from JESUS CHRIST SUPERSTAR), and the closing "My Sweet Lord." Alone among the classic big band-era vocalists, only Peggy Lee would continue to credibly perform folk, rock, country, and pop in the requisite style of the times.
