Recorded in 1932, 1933, 1946, 1947 & 1970.
Louis Armstrong's trailblazing career in jazz lasted well over five decades. Most Armstrong compilations focus on one of three broad periods: his early days as one of the music's most innovative players, the long middle-period when he was one of the country's most tireless bandleaders, or the '50s/'60s era during which Armstrong reinvented himself as a genial pop singer. Remarkably, the 17 live tracks on THE FABULOUS LOUIS ARMSTRONG touch upon all three of Armstrong's musical phases.
Low-budget bootlegs flooded the market in the years after Armstrong's death. But THE FABULOUS LOUIS ARMSTRONG features better-than-usual sound and a selection of rarely heard live recordings. Reaching across the Armstrong catalog, from a 1932 romp through the standard "That's My Home" to a pair of 1970 recordings of Duke Ellington's "Mood Indigo" and Armstrong's own signature tune, "What a Wonderful World," FABULOUS is an aptly titled summary of Armstrong's long and fruitful live career.
