This twofer contains an extensive sampling of the best of singer-guitarist McKinley Morganfield, aka Muddy Waters, possibly the greatest of the Chicago-style (meaning electric and most often accompanied by a full band) blues performers. Backed by such legends as the pianist Otis Spann and the harmonica player Little Walter, Waters performs a stream of classic blues sides, including "Mannish Boy," "Gypsy Woman," and "You Can't Lose What You Never Had." Also included are the skeletal, electrified "Whiskey Blues" and "Too Young to Know" (the later featuring dark, chilling Delta-styled guitar from Waters) and the stomping, full-band "She's All right." Here, stripped of slickness and polish, are the earthy roots of modern blues.
