Product Description:

Given the success of the 1954 Broadway musical The Pajama Game, which ran over 1,000 performances; threw off three pop hits in "Hey There," "Steam Heat," and "Hernando's Hideaway"; and was adapted into a 1957 movie starring Doris Day, it's surprising that, over the subsequent 50 years, there was only one Broadway revival, a 1973 production that ran only 65 performances and didn't even merit a cast recording. But in 2006, Harry Connick, Jr. expressed interest in the property, and that was enough to get the Roundabout Theatre Company to mount a Broadway version co-starring Kelli O'Hara and featuring Michael McKean. The result is this new recording, featuring spiffy new orchestrations by Dick Lieb and Danny Troob that seem tailored to Connick's neo-swing style. O'Hara is a standout, and McKean makes a comic mark on "I'll Never Be Jealous Again" and "Think of the Time I Save." The weak link, ironically, is Connick, who sings in his patented Young Sinatra style, which just doesn't have the heft needed for the manly character of Sid Sorokin. (The original Sid was John Raitt.) He is, however, better when he's singing with O'Hara; they spark each other. This is a longer score than it was in 1954. The ballad "The World Around Us," sung here by Connick, was in the show on opening night the first time around, but was cut shortly after and not recorded for the original Broadway cast album. Songwriter Richard Adler (whose partner, Jerry Ross, had died in 1955) added the song "Watch Your Heart" for the unrecorded 1973 revival; it was actually a rewritten version of "What's Wrong with Me?," from Adler's 1961 musical Kwamina. Under the title "If You Win You Lose," it is included as a medley with a reprise of "Hey There," sung effectively by O'Hara with Connick joining in. Newly added is another Adler interpolation, "The Three of Us." (The production won the 2006 Tony Award for best revival, but closed after only 129 performances.) ~ William Ruhlmann
