The Hi-Lo's on Reprise reissues two of the Hi-Lo's albums on Reprise from 1963: The Hi-Lo's Happen to Bossa Nova and The Hi-Lo's Happen to Folk Songs. Both are uncharacteristic efforts that show the group's willingness to push the pop-vocal group format in new directions. The bossa nova album sets the quartet's harmonies to Brazilian beats and music, while the folk album applies traditional pop instrumentation and Four Freshmen-styled vocal arrangements to country and folk songs. The effect is unusual and over-the-top; hearing songs associated with unadorned, old-timey feel (like "Turkey in the Straw"). These songs, reconceived as citified pop dramas with wailing horns and gymnastic vocals, are truly a one-of-a-kind experience. These are among the last albums the Hi-Lo's made for Reprise before their comeback. ~ Greg Adams
