This 1998 concert, recorded for broadcast on PBS at the Cerritos Center for the Performing Arts in California, presents vocalist Michael Crawford at the top of his form, exhibiting his prodigious talents before an appreciative audience off whose enthusiasm Crawford obviously feeds. Contemporary show tunes are the order of the day, and Crawford displays his knack for picking the classiest of them, and delivering them with both facility and conviction. Andrew Lloyd Weber's work is represented here with "The Phantom of the Opera" and "Love Changes Everything" (among others), but Crawford also does well by the work of Sondheim and Michel Legrand. Demonstrating his versatility, the vocalist throws in an affecting Irish Medley that includes the moving "Galway Bay" and "I'll Take You Home Again, Kathleen." Recommended to both fans and neophytes.
