Product Description:

Liner Note Author: John Masouri.
Cornell Campbell is not one of the best-known names in reggae, despite the fact that he possessed one of the loveliest, most wistful voices laid to wax in reggae history, was a fine songwriter, and had a string of smash hits on the Jamaican charts. Thankfully, the double-disc NATTY DREAD ANTHOLOGY, a superb overview of Campbell's career from the early 1970s through the early '80s, gives the artist's work the retrospective attention it deserves. Heavily influenced by American R&B and soul, yet unmistakably entrenched in rocksteady, Rasta roots, and (on later releases) dancehall rhythms, Campbell's music is always absorbing and rarely less than excellent.
Campbell's main collaborative partner was heavyweight producer Bunny Lee, and 40 of the 46 tracks included on NATTY DREAD ANTHOLOGY feature Lee at the boards. There's a sheen Lee gives to the instrumentation and a crispness to the lock-step grooves that perfectly complements Campbell's open-hearted, falsetto voice. The early part of the set contains the singer's best known songs, including the sweet bounce of "The Gorgon," the Rasta narrative "Natty Dread in a Greenwich Farm," and the lush and lyrically romantic "Stars," but there are few missteps here, making this set the first and last word on Cornell Campbell.
