Raul Malo made his name as the singer for country-rockers the Mavericks, but as a solo artist he has expanded well beyond the confines of country to become a pop singer in the classic sense, capable of tackling standards of any stripe. So it's no big surprise to find him taking on the Christmas repertoire with MARSHMALLOW WORLD & OTHER HOLIDAY FAVORITES. His larger-than-life voice blends the near-operatic tones of Roy Orbison with Sinatra-style crooning, and he's consistently commanding here, moving through everything from a Phil Spector/Wall of Sound-style "Not So Merry Christmas" to a big-band version of "Santa Claus is Back in Town."
