On POP CLASSICS, The Count and his Orchestra perform such familiar '60s tunes as "Ain't Too Proud to Beg," "Let the Good Times Roll," and "Hang on Sloopy." These 12 pop songs sound superbly grandiose in their big band incarnations, and as usual, the Basie band swings hard.
Many of Count Basie's trademarks are to be found here. For example, there's the crisp articulation of the horns as they blast riffs over the gentle and buoyant swing of the rhythm section, especially noticeable on the introduction to "Don't Let the Sun Catch You Crying." As an added bonus, this track features Basie on Hammond organ. In general, the band plays a set of bluesy tunes that showcase its tuneful approach to pop music, even incorporating a few funky jazz crossover numbers, such as the now-standard "Mercy, Mercy, Mercy" by Joe Zawinul, and the Eddie Floyd/Steve Cropper hit "Knock on Wood."
