"The gallows drollery that is the film's lingua franca is the cool over for the constant potential for hot violence, which Cavalanti renders with a a between-the-eyes realism..."
From the novel by Jackson Budd, comes this forgotten noir of postwar England, with a script by the screenwriter of THE WIZARD OF OZ. Trevor Howard is Clem, an ex-serviceman who is drawn to black-marketeering. When his sadistic gang boss betrays him after Clem refuses to deal in drugs, the story takes a brutal, vengeful turn. An atypically grim and uncompromising film for its time.
