Santa's Bag: An All-Star Jazz Christmas finds Telarc's top artists contributing Christmas chestnuts and holiday tunes. The recordings were all made in the early '90s, and feature some of the great artists from the prime years of jazz doing their thing in the autumn of their careers -- their thing being light and easy jazz, perfect for relaxing and enjoying the holiday season. Highlights include Joe Williams rocking the "Christmas Blues," Mel Torm‚ crooning (and scatting) his way through a hip "Good King Wenceslas," Jimmy McGriff and Hank Crawford easing through "Silver Bells," Hilton Ruiz's beautiful take on "O Come, O Come, Emmanuel," and a relaxed bop duet between Dave Brubeck and Gerry Mulligan on "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town." The musicians may have had a little (or a lot of) grey at their temples, but they could still play better than most half their ages. This is a fine collection for fans of mainstream jazz, guaranteed to fill you full of holiday cheer. ~ Tim Sendra
