The Stranglers released SUITE XVI in 2007, a full 30 years after the band's debut, RATTUS NORVEGICUS. If it wasn't shocking enough that the Stranglers were still turning out records after all that time, it's even more of a surprise to find that SUITE XVI plays with a good deal of vitality and punch.
The propulsive, moody opener "Unbroken" shows the band still knows how to rock, as do the tracks "The Spectre of Love" and the spiky, punkish "Summat Outanowt." The dark yet melodic, aggressive yet accessible sound that's defined the band since the beginning (with the pop smarts that have characterized their best work since the '80s) is here, and while it can't be said that SUITE XVI is a great leap forward, it should please their many loyal fans.
