LOVE, LIES...AND OTHER STRANGE THINGS is a greatest-hits record.
There are many skimpy, budget-priced Thompson Twins best-ofs. You don't get to be one of the most iconic bands of the early MTV era without some cheap nostalgia coming your way later. But the 16-track LOVE LIES AND OTHER STRANGE THINGS compilation is better than any of them. Like almost all Twins compilations, it ignores the band's first two albums almost entirely, saving only the irresistible single "In the Name of Love" from oblivion.
The four tracks from the band's US breakthrough SIDE KICKS are intoxicating, from the hypercatchy "Lies" and "Love On Your Side" to the unsettling atmospherics of "If You Were Here." The five singles from their mega-selling INTO THE GAP don't sound any worse for their year-long omnipresence on radio and television. Skimming the best of their uneven later albums, including the lovely and dramatic "Lay Your Hands On Me," this compilation may be all the Thompson Twins you need.
