After four excellent volumes featuring local and regional soul charters, ITP Records veers slightly off its course. "Baby Come Close," by Smokey Robinson, one of my favorites, doesn't belong on the Underground Oldies series, no Motown recording does since they're readily available elsewhere. These tracks read like a Northern Soul compilation, only Smokey Robinson's "Baby Come Close," Gene Chandler's "Man Temptation," and Barbara Lynn's "Until Then I'll Suffer" are familiarities. Contains sharp renditions of "Sitting In The Park," by Bobby McClure, and "I Do You Love," by Barbara Mason. The Moments "Pocketful Of Heartbreak," a dragger led by John Morgan, was the flip of "I Do," Harry Ray replaced Morgan. Little known artists, like Backyard Construction, Broadway Express, Abraham & Sons, and the Heartbreakers wallowed in obscurity. Two sparklers: "Great Performer," by AD & G, and "All For You," by the Admirations are delightful, but like others would fit better on a collection of more obscure recordings. ~ Andrew Hamilton
