Originally released in 1990 and reissued by Shout! Factory in 2008, AT THE EDGE finds Mickey Hart perfecting his union of populism and ethnomusicology. A veritable field guide to humankind's primal rhythmic origins, Hart employs everything in the hippie dreamkit to create a polyrhythmic pastiche as dense and dreamlike as a rainforest mist. Panpipes, rainsticks, and gourds make experiences throughout the album's nine tracks sonically augmented by digital delays and space echos.
On cuts such as "Gala #4" and "Pigs in Space," Hart does not go to the outer reaches alone; he brings fellow travelers Jerry Garcia, Nigerian legend Babatunde Olatunji, Airto Moreira, and Zakir Hussain along with him. AT THE EDGE was originally released in concurrence with Hart's global percussion bible PLANET DRUM: A CELEBRATION OF PERCUSSION AND RHYTHM.
