The Rip Chords (Surf): Ernie Bringas, Terry Melcher, Phil Stewart , Bruce Johnston .
Though they had a bona-fide hit with "Gone," many of the Rip Chords' songs weren't performed by the early-1960s surf-hot rod outfit at all, but by producer Terry Melcher and future Beach Boy Bruce Johnston, who used the band's name as a kind of flag of convenience under which to release their own productions. The difference between tracks like the small-group sound of "Karen" and the more sophisticated sound of the Melcher/Johnston "Hey Little Cobra" is highlighted throughout this hot-rod and surf-music best-of, which nevertheless contains many genre classics, like the sly "One Piece Topless Bathing Suit" and the pumped-up "'40 Ford Time."
