COLLECTION serves up the funky best of 1970s R & B legends The Commodores, including "Brick House," "Too Hot to Trot," and "Slippery When Wet."
The Collection, released in 2002 by the U.K.'s Spectrum Music label, is one of several decent single-disc Commodores anthologies released during the late '90s and early 2000s. This one concentrates on the band's output through 1977, meaning the albums from Machine Gun through Commodores get more attention than normal, yet some of the slower classics from this phase, like "Easy" and "Zoom," are bizarrely left out. Though it accentuates the band's funkier side, there's really no reason why a handful of OK album cuts got the nod over such top-notch songs. Some of the enduring highlights found here include "Brick House," "Fancy Dancer," "Too Hot ta Trot," "Machine Gun," and "Slippery When Wet." ~ Andy Kellman
