The 2008 reissue of MO ROOTS does Maceo Parker fans a good turn by putting this 1991 instrumental groovefest back into circulation. Flanked by fellow JB alums Fred Wesley and Pee Wee Ellis, Parker wails through 10 cuts of feel-good, jazz-inflected R&B and funk. Amid some fine band-penned originals, the set list includes lively covers of tunes by Ray Charles, Otis Redding, and Marvin Gaye, as well as funkified treatments of jazz compositions by Horace Silver and Lionel Hampton.
