Bob Wills & His Texas Playboys were the pacesetting Western swing band of 1935-1945, mixing together the instrumentation and flavor of country music with swinging jazz. This sampler has 16 of the Playboys' better recordings, including the rollicking "Ten Years," "Beaumont Rag," "Blue Yodel No. 1," "Spanish Two Step," and "San Antonio Rose." The music is not in chronological order (skipping around quite a bit) and completists will not be satisfied, but as an introduction to this important's band's music, this CD fits the bill quite well. ~ Scott Yanow
