Peter Yarrow of Peter, Paul & Mary, made several solo albums during the group's interregnum, which lasted for most of the 1970s. But after they reunited for good in 1978, he restricted himself to trio recordings. Mary Travers' death in 2009 put a permanent end to PP&M, though, and with this live set (the audio complement to a DVD), he once again puts his name upfront on an album cover. He is not alone, however. The cover itself notes his "special guests": Noel Paul Stookey (the "Paul" of PP&M), Mary Chapin Carpenter, Keb' Mo', Bethany & Rufus (that's Bethany Yarrow, his daughter), and Billy Jones. Joined by the Mustard Seed School Choir and the Walkabout Clearwater Chorus, they gathered at the New York Society for Ethical Culture Concert Hall for this show, which looks back over Yarrow's career in a set of PP&M favorites. Yarrow was wise to enlist so many friends. As becomes apparent at the outset with his "Weave Me the Sunshine," the singer, now in his early seventies, is not as powerful a vocalist as he once was. But all the help tends to mask that, and at times, such as on the children's song "Some Houses," which is sung by Jones, and "All Hid," sung by Bethany, Yarrow takes a backseat to his compatriots. Both Bethany and Carpenter take over parts once handled by Travers at times, although there are PP&M songs, notably "Don't Laugh at Me" and the closer, "A' Soalin'," that are sung by the surviving duo of Yarrow and Stookey. Then, Travers' absence is especially felt. ~ William Ruhlmann
