Rating 3.5 Creepy Children, Stupid Adults Movie Lover: from Media, PA US -- September, 2, 2007

Let me begin by saying that evil kids are universally scary.

The opening scenes in this movie were brilliant. Sounds and sprays convey the massacre best: a whirring of an electric cutting tool, the click of a lock, and then a splash of red. The scene with the girl and her brother is touching in its little kid mundanity, reminding us that not all children are evil little subhuman trolls. "Cross my heart and hope to die", the litany sounds like he was promising not to tell mommy about her filching a cookie. Poor kid. The young preacher and the redhead did great acting jobs.

Now, the problems. First, male lead. He is capable of two states: bland neutrality and condescending anger. He just never seems to percieve that the situation could possibly threaten him. Always just dull inexperessiveness or "You better stop this or there will be SERIOUS trouble young man". His wife type was more expressive, but perhaps this was not difficult. I never got a clear understanding of why they needed the gasoline and the ethanol substance. Special effects were minimal, but used to good effect.

This movie is a solid, unyeilding 3.5 star film. It's better to watch it than not to watch it, and at this price, there's no way to rationalize failing to purchase unless you've got issues with the genre.
