Product Description:

Based on Tom Robbins' eponymous cult novel about a woman whose large thumbs give her a talent for hitchhiking, this all-star western-cum- road-movie follows her travels and travails as she visits a lesbian dude ranch.

Description by Warner Home Video:

From the director of Drugstore Cowboy and My Own Private Idaho comes a star-studded comedy based on the best-selling novel by Tom Robbins.
The cowgirls on the Rubber Rose Ranch are staging a rebellion. Delores Del Ruby (Bracco) is leading the uproarious uprising, but it's really Sissy Hankshaw (Thurman) who's providing the spiritual leadership for this rag-tag bunch of female bandits. With her marvelous thumbs and her funky brand of femininity, she shatters all male chauvinist illusions and boldly goes where no woman has gone before.

Plot Synopsis:

29-year old Sissy Hankshaw leaves New York behind for the lush pastures of a midwestern ranch where she's scheduled to model for feminine hygiene advertisements. When she arrives at the beauty-ranch, Sissy's introduced to a band of free-living, free-loving cowgirls rebelling against their drag queen employer and ranch owner, The Countess. Joining the cowgirls in their collective struggle against exploitation, Sissy not only finds liberating comradeship, she also finds romantic companionship.

Production Notes:

  • Director Gus Van Sant, premiere auteur of low-budget cult classics "Mala Noche," "Drugstore Cowboy" and "My Own Private Idaho," adapted this film from Tom Robbins's novel of the same name. Made on a budget of $7.5 million, "Cowgirls" was going to be a major studio project, but Tristar backed away from the picture and gave Fine Line Features the greenlight to buy it.
  • Regional premiere at the 6th Virginia Festival of American Film October 28, 1993.
  • Color by Alphacine; prints by Kodak.
  • Rated BBFC 15 by the British Board of Film Classification.
  • Copyright 1994 Fine Line Features.
