Personnel includes: Johnny Mercer, Helen O'Connell, Bobby Troup (vocals).
Although Johnny Mercer is best known as a songwriter, he was also one of the co-founders of Capitol Records and a fine vocalist in his own right. While Mercer was an accomplished interpreter of songs by other composers, this 12-track budget-priced collection presents the Georgia-born crooner singing his own tunes. (Unfortunately, the liner notes don't reveal much recording information, so the session dates aren't clear.) While the deep-voiced Mercer carries jaunty songs such as "On the Atchison, Topeka & the Santa Fe" and "Jeepers Creepers" alone, he's joined by Bobby Troup on the smooth "Jamboree Jones" and by Helen O'Connell on four numbers, including the dreamy "Moon River," the delicate "Autumn Leaves," and the swaying "Two of a Kind," a number co-penned by Bobby Darin. Though countless singers have placed their own stamps on these time-honored tunes, SONGSMITH FROM SAVANNAH gives listeners a chance to hear how they sound as sung by their revered creator.
