With Rat Scabies and Dave Vanian the only remaining original members, the Damned attempt a hard rock return to form on NOT OF THIS EARTH. Leaving their Goth period well behind them they scale the divide between metal and punk with some success.
Beginning with the hard rockin' "I Need a Life," the Damned make it obvious that all is not the same in their world. A standout track, "Testify," smells of the Damned going Doors, and it works. This style continues on "Shut It" before moving onto a more sultry sound in "Tailspin" which has a rare distinction of featuring ex-Sex Pistol Glen Matlock on bass, as does "Never Could Believe." In an almost Spinal Tap-like finish the Damned's first guitarist, Brian James, gone since the late '70s, returns to co-write and play on the last track, "Prokofiev."
