Arranger: Alice Coltrane.
Trained as a pianist, though also adept at harp, organ, percussion, and as a composer and arranger, Alice Coltrane's aesthetic was deeply influenced by the avant garde, Eastern spirituality, and the modal explorations of her late husband, John Coltrane. IMPULSE STORY collects eight tracks from Alice Coltrane's Impulse output, providing an overview of her work for the label (all but "Translinear Light," from the 2000 album of the same name, are from the late 1960s and early '70s).
Each of the compositions were written by the artist, with the exception of the excerpts from her dazzling interpretation of Igor Stravinsky's "The Firebird." Expansive, gorgeous, and not unconnected to the jazz tradition of bop and swing, the music on IMPULSE STORY is a fine introduction to this too-often overlooked figure. A personnel roster that includes luminaries like Pharoah Sanders, Rashied Ali, Ron Carter, Joe Henderson, Charlie Haden, and Jack DeJohnette is further reason to pick up this well-selected set.
