"...Lean's balanced compositions and judicious mise en scene remain as pleasing as ever..."Los Angeles Times - 10/30/2003
"...Impassioned, stirring and stylish, this picture is a great screen storyteller honoring a great novelist..."David Lean's prodigious adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic expands fervently on the theme of a lonely boy in a world of bullies. When the orphan hero, Oliver, escapes to London, the Artful Dodger delivers him to the notorious Fagan, who makes him part of the gang but soon allows for Oliver to take the fall for a bungled pickpocketing scam. To date, no movie has better captured Dickens's blend of sensitivity and violence.
This lavish adaptation based on the Charles Dickens novel OLIVER TWIST is about an orphan boy who runs away from a workhouse and meets a pickpocket on the streets of London. Oliver is taken in by the Artful Dodger, a notorious scrounger, and he joins his household of young boys who are trained to steal for their master. The boys thieving activities, and others who desire to cash in on Oliver's fortune through criminal activities, leads to murder and community outrage as they are hunted down. This version is topped by Alex Guinness's masterly performance as the Artful Dodger's fence, that great misguided connoisseur of the gutter and archthug, Fagan.
