2006's SAPPHIRE is not only Teena Marie's best release in some time (even trumping her fine 2004 "comeback" album, LA DONA), it may be her best album since her early '80s heyday. Lengthy and sprawling, yet packed with superb songwriting, vocal performances, and production, Marie proves she is still one of the strongest talents on the contemporary R&B scene, her age (50) and her race (white) notwithstanding. SAPPHIRE boasts vintage smooth-soul tunes ("Cruise Control" is sung with the architect of smooth soul himself, Smokey Robinson), bumping dance-pop ("Make It Hot"), and even nods to G-funk ("Love Is a Gangsta"), proving Teena Marie can keep it as fresh and real as any R&B upstart from the 2000s.

This CD from Teena is just wonderful. i'm 19 year old girl and me and my 2 younger sisters love it. I love the short but sweet song with the one and only Smokey Robinson.*sigh* "God created"(in fact this is the wedding song of '06 for sure, which leads into what would be a big hit "'Cruise control". then the next track i love is is "baby who's is it" love it! it's funky and somethin' to bounce to. the next song is "make it hot" that is for real dancin' music, with a lil' summin' sexy. "Oo Wee" already hit the charts, with a bam! this is what first made me want to buy this CD. "Creepin" the next track tells the strory of a woman who knows her man is cheatin on her but is sexyness still makes her weak, very sexy song. "Love is a gangsta" is hot it show the similarities between love and many things in life that are just crazy, and everything this song say is soo true. love it. the 11th track "you blow me away" is a tribute to the one and only Rick James, her vocals in this show her love for him even now. she even says "i love you rick...there i've gone and said it". many many other soulful songs here but i'll just say this that my favorite song on the CD is "Resilient". she and her daughter Ali Rose do this right, literally brought me to tears, this is a touching tribute to those who lost there love ones in huricane Katrina, and for her best friend's mohter who lost her live in the hurricane.
This CD got me hook on Lady Tee, now i've got to go back and buy some of her older CD's
