Recorded at the Van Gelder Studio, Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey on March 22, 1960. Originally released on Blue Note (84269, 84296). Includes liner notes by Leonard Feather and Nat Hentoff.
OPEN HOUSE includes a total of eight tracks taken from one day of recording in 1960. This session was originally released on two separate LPs, OPEN HOUSE and PLAIN TALK. The program is vintage Smith-ballads and blues played with bebop tendencies. On this occasion, the basic organ/guitar/drums combo that Smith made de rigueur for his many followers is augmented by an interesting assortment of horn players.
Tenorist Ike Quebec dates back to the swing era and the big-toned tenor tradition, but he made frequent appearances with the hard bop crew throughout the '50s, playing on recordings with guitarist Grant Green and others. Altoist Jackie McLean came straight out of the bop era but proceeded to stretch things in more avant directions during the '60s. Blue Mitchell, like Smith, comes with a solid Blue Note pedigree, having joined Horace Silver's quintet two years before this recording date. The organ combo may seem like a cliche now but, in 1960, Smith was still laying down the rules of a world he had invented. The results were solid and vital, a stomping trip through a handful of standards and blues originals.

When you talk about the Hammond Organ, you have to say, "Before, or after, Jimmy Smith?"
For nearly 5 decades, Jimmy Smith single-handedly re-invented, and innovated, the way the organ is played today.
These BlueNote Recordings from the late fifties and early sixties are my favorites.
Many have been remastered and have added bonus tracks.
The remastered copy of 'Open House', also contains the album 'Plain Talk', so its a great value for the price. And does it cook!
Jimmys left us, but his outstanding legacy, and vast catalog, will always be with us to savor.
So, get them ribs ready, and crank this mother up!
