MIDNITE LOVER continues his musical journey with surprising results. This album is a departure from the one-dimensional reggae/rap stylings he's so often associated with. The music here is varied, with more acoustic instruments and varied musical styles. Gospel, country, and soul are all given the Shaggy treatment, to good effect. "My Dream" is a simple, three-chord pop song with country-inflected harmonies on the chorus and a piano beating out some basic chords. But have no fear, Shaggy is still Shaggy, and his vocal trademark is in full effect throughout MIDNITE LOVER. His vocals have always had a unique texture, at once forceful and light-hearted, as heard on "Perfect Song," a high-energy ode to a potential lover which even incorporates a banjo. Fans won't be disappointed, and he may gain some new converts with this adventurous effort.
