With their third album, INSPIRATION (and two gold records already under the belt), Frankie Beverly and Maze moved slightly away from the funkier, more groove-oriented aspect of their first two outings. INSPIRATION bears a notably (but not egregiously) smoother, more commercial sound, in both the production and the songwriting. There are a couple of funk-heavy tracks--"Welcome Home" in particular sounds like a collision of "Superstition" and "Brick House"--but the sweet, luxurious ballads that had always been a part of the band's toolbox dominate the record. Of course, it was this side of the Maze sound that would ultimately garner them the most attention, and listening to Beverly's silky croon riding above the summer-breeze waft of the band on "Lovely Inspiration," it's easy to see why.
