"The Ironic Twist" was nominated for the 1999 Grammy Award for Best Rock Instrumental Performance.

On Jimmie Vaughan's second album OUT THERE, he once again joins forces with producer Nile Rodgers. On this collection, Vaughan has his boots firmly placed in the greasy R&B stylings of Hammond organ innovator Bill Doggett. Using Federal Records' legendary house musician Bill Willis to sub organ for bass means OUT THERE has a fat groove to it that's not normally found on blues records. Vaughan's fat guitar tone works well on the funky "Like A King," the Grammy-nominated shuffle instrumental "The Ironic Twist" and a funky cover of Johnny "Guitar" Watson's "Motor Head Baby."

Admittedly self-conscious about his recent start in singing, Vaughan more than holds his own, particularly on the Gospel-soaked title track that finds him backed up by a trio of vocalists including Was Not Was' Sir Harry Bowens. Vaughan's warm singing style goes well with the vibe of the slinky "Can't Say No." He also does his best Al Green on "Astral Projection Blues," an ethereal romp that gives goosebumps as guest Dr. John doubles up on vibraphone and piano. The acoustic instrumental "Little Son, Big Sun" that closes out the record reaffirms Vaughan's often over-looked status as keeper of the contemporary blues flame.
