Recorded live at The "It" Club, Los Angeles, California on October 31 and November 1, 1964. Includes liner notes by Bob Blumenthal.
Digitally remastered by Mark Wilder (Sony Music Studios, New York, New York).
Though Monk was one of the first pianists to explore the strange new music of the 1940s, he could never be categorized merely as a "bop pianist" since his style was too spare, mysterious and angular. Monk would never play a flurry of notes when one or two would do. He would construct counter-melodies and insert odd, unexpected accents behind the soloists. His music was rich with the blues, but the blues was "viewed" through a prism, broken down into different shades. Monk's tunes are distinctive--they sound like no one else's. Many are jazz standards: "Well, You Needn't," "Evidence," and the oft-covered "'Round Midnight."
This 2-CD set collects virtually all the music the Monk group played at the Los Angeles club The It in the fall of 1964. The group featured the fine, under-appreciated tenor saxophonist Charlie Rouse, as well as ace drummer Ben Riley, who had a Monk-approach to percussion. Both are virtually Monk veterans, and give the knotty, often humorous tunes the class and style they deserve. The recording quality is excellent, though one can hear some crowd chatter from time to time. IT is a fine addition to Monk's body of work.
