Recorded live at Blues Alley, Washington D.C. on December 19 & 20, 1986. Includes liner notes by Stanley Crouch.
Recorded in New Orleans in 1987, this two-disc live set by the Wynton Marsalis Quartet (featuring the trumpeter's brother Delfeayo) shows that Marsalis is more inventive and less conservative than his detractors claim. Weaving multiple interludes of the tunes "Knozz-Moe-King" and "Juan" around bebop-flavored originals like "Chambers of Tain" and oddly-accented reinterpretations of standards like "Cherokee" and "Autumn Leaves," Marsalis and cohorts obviously hold jazz traditions in the highest respect. Nevertheless, Marsalis' uncommonly graceful, classically-tinged trumpet work is unique and inspired. LIVE AT BLUES ALLEY is one of Wynton Marsalis' best works.
