After releasing two massively successful records in 1972, Loggins And Messina were ideally positioned to take the American album and singles charts by storm with their third LP. That the shaggy, down-home looking pair were in the full bloom of their career is evident just from the album photography: they're presented as carefree men of leisure, at the helm of their own schooner. The message is clear: Loggins And Messina have made it. As indeed they had.
On FULL SAIL, Loggins And Messina continue to play their brand of close-harmony, tightly played, melodic, country-laced rock. They hadn't lost their knack for catchy singles, either. "My Music," which reprises the carefree mood of '50s dance music that "Your Mama Don't Dance" had referenced, charted well, though not quite as high as the earlier song. The duo's nostalgia reflected a wider fascination for that era, which was reflected in movies like AMERICAN GRAFFITI and television shows like Happy Days. Keeping to their traditional approach, Loggins contributes the most sweet-voiced, romantic numbers, like the unrepentantly MOR "Love Song," and Messina offers slightly headier fare, stretching out with another of his trademark medleys.
This audiophile recording of Loggins And Messina's third record enables listeners to appreciate some of the finer details of the expert playing and ornate production that characterize this exemplary platter of light '70s pop-rock. It also includes a full set of lyrics, including every last "Boh doh doh doh doh" of the Jimmy Buffet-style Hawaiian fantasy "Lahaina" that opens the record.
As Kenny Loggins acknowledges in his nostalgic album notes, FULL SAIL became the biggest seller in the Loggins And Messina catalog. True to its name, the record captures the group at its height, before changing tastes and the pressures of the music industry brought about its demise just a few years later. It includes the radio hit "My Music," which echoed the '50s rock flavor of "Your Mama Don't Dance," along with romantic ballads by Loggins, and two of Messina's medley-style pieces that combine for almost 20 minutes of music. Trivia note: on FULL SAIL, the artist formerly known as Ken Loggins uses the transitional "K. Loggins." The next year would see the birth of Kenny.
