LIVE! THIRTY DAYS AGO captures the French pop mavens Phoenix in concert during the fall of 2004 while on a European tour in support of ALPHABETICAL. Here frontman Thomas Mars and company cherry-pick from the aforementioned record and its eclectic predecessor, UNITED. Those expecting the band to indulge in the electronic aspects of their sound may be surprised by this 10-song set, which creates an organic vibe with echoes of 1970s R&B, funk, and light rock. Shimmering guitar lines are prominent throughout the concert, anchored expertly by subtle keyboard work, fluid bass playing, and tight drumming. The highlight of THIRTY DAYS AGO arrives close to the end of the show, with extended versions of "Everything Is Everything" and "If I Ever Feel Better." The latter song is bolstered by some unusually heavy guitar riffs in the vein of "Funky Squaredance," another fan favorite included on this excellent live outing.
