-- "Often introduced with some great studio chatter, the 21 tracks include four alternate versions and a couple of bonuses in 'If You Are But A Dream' and 'Ol' Man River'..."
Includes alternate takes, B-sides, and 1 previously unreleased song.
For anyone seeking a great one-disc anthology on the music of Screamin' Jay Hawkins, this is the ticket. Nicely remastered, there are fine notes and photographs in the 16-page booklet. Besides his most well known and enduring song, "I Put A Spell On You" (offered here in its hit version along with an alternate take), there are other essential titles from his singular body of work.
The man's interests stretched far and wide. There are punchy R&B tracks, nonsensical forays into the worlds of pop and rock, wild cabaret numbers, and faux-operatic mayhem. On the completely over-the-top rendition of "Orange Colored Sky," Hawkins sings in front of an orchestra and chorus like a maniacal Broadway star. This collection is rife with passion, invention, and plain old fun.
